The ceremony was to honor the 69 1st Cavalry soldiers who died during the division’s recent deployment in Iraq. Aurora’s son (also Stephanie’s brother), Sgt. Reuben M. Fernandez III, was killed in Iraq on October 11, 2008. They are standing at the memorial where the name of Sgt. Fernandez was placed along with other soldiers from the 1st Cavalry who have died.
